Covered deck replacement

What was done
We replaced the whole covered deck. First we shored up the roof, then tore out the old deck completely and replaced the beam that carries the roof. The new deck sits on a pressure-treated frame with composite decking, new stairs, railings and a gate. All exposed wood was primed and painted to match the house.
Key difficulties
The roof rests on the deck structure, so it had to stay supported the whole time: temporary posts and bracing went in before demolition and came out only after the new frame and the new roof beam took the load. The second challenge was paint. Pressure-treated lumber comes wet from the treatment, and paint put on too early peels off. We waited about two weeks for the wood to dry before priming and painting.

Roof shoring and demolition
The old deck was carrying part of the roof, so before tearing anything out we set temporary posts and bracing under it. Then we removed the decking, stairs, railings, joists and posts, and replaced the beam that supports the roof.

We built a new pressure-treated frame: posts, beams, ledger, joists and blocking, tied together with galvanized connectors. On top went composite decking that won't rot or splinter, then new stairs, railings and a gate.

Drying, painting and the result
Fresh pressure-treated wood needs time to dry before it holds paint, so the railings stood bare for about two weeks. Once the wood was dry, we primed and painted every exposed wood part to match the house.
