What was done
We redid the whole backyard of a house on a wooded, sloped lot, from the parking area down to the lower patio. The old wood deck at the sliding doors became a Nicolock paver patio with a dark border. The decks got TimberTech Prime+ composite boards in Dark Cocoa and black TimberTech Impression Rail Express railings. We rebuilt the stairs and walkway from the parking area to the hot tub deck, reinforced the framing for a new hot tub and ran its electrical, installed a Trex RainEscape under-deck drainage system with new gutters and assembled an outdoor sauna on its own 240V circuit.
Key difficulties
Once the old boards came off, the stairs from the parking area and the lower deck turned out to be rotted at the ground: stringers, posts and rim boards were soft through. Patching was not an option, so we rebuilt the whole stair system and the lower deck frame from the posts up, with new beams, joists, rim boards and structural connectors. The second challenge was the hot tub. A filled tub weighs thousands of pounds, so the framing under it was reinforced before any decking went on.
Demolition and hidden rot
We stripped the old decking, railings and stairs down to the frame. Underneath, the stair stringers and parts of the lower deck frame were rotted where they met the ground, so the scope grew into a full rebuild of the stairs and the lower deck structure.
New framing, stairs and drainage
New pressure-treated framing went in with butyl tape on the joists, a reinforced frame under the hot tub and new stairs from the parking area. Under the decking we installed Trex RainEscape troughs and a 6-inch aluminum gutter to keep water off the framing and the area below.
Pavers, decking and railings
The old wood deck at the sliding doors was replaced with a Nicolock paver patio with a dark border. The decks and stairs got TimberTech Prime+ composite boards in Dark Cocoa and black TimberTech railings.
Hot tub and outdoor sauna
We wired the new hot tub on its reinforced deck, then assembled the outdoor sauna under the upper deck on a dedicated 240V circuit and finished the paver patio around it.
